NBCUniversal will shrink the theatrical window from 120 days to roughly 45 days starting in 2022 for most movies from Universal, Focus Features, Illumination and DreamWorks.
45 days in theaters
Like Disney and Warner Bros, NBCUniversal has announced plans to significantly reduce the exclusivity period given to theaters to ensure that streamers at home can enjoy new movies sooner.
The new distribution model will begin with the studios' 2022 slate and include the "majority" of movies from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, Illumination and DreamWorks Animation Films including The 355, Ticket To Paradise, The Black Phone, Marry Me, The Bad Guys, Downton Abbey: A New Era, Ambulance, and Halloween Ends.
Tentpole movies such as Jurassic World: Dominion and Oppenheimer were not mentioned so they are most likely exceptions under the new 45-day plan.

Michael Bay's new movie Ambulance will debut on Peacock after 45 days in theaters
Universal Filmed Entertainment Group said that it is still prioritizing the theatrical experience but believes at the same time that the decision demonstrates its continued commitment to Peacock.
- "Prioritizing the theatrical experience and eventizing our world class content remains the cornerstone of our business," said Peter Levinsohn, Vice Chairman and Chief Distribution Officer, UFEG. "By ensuring our upcoming slate has both a theatrical window and timely Peacock debut, we satisfy the needs and expectations for key stakeholders across the spectrum, from our filmmakers and producing partners, to cinemagoers and Peacock subscribers."
The movies will debut exclusively on Peacock as early as 45 days after their theatrical release. Peacock did not comment on its plans for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos streaming, which is still not available on the platform.
- "As we continue investing in the most valued and sought-after content for Peacock, films are essential to that mix," said Kelly Campbell, President, Peacock. "The team at Universal Filmed Entertainment Group are fantastic partners and we are excited to bring their amazing slate of blockbuster films and beloved franchises to Peacock as early as 45 days after their theatrical release, and provide a steady stream of fresh, original films exclusively for Peacock customers throughout the year."
For most of Europe, Comcast (NBCUniversal, Peacock, Sky) has partnered with ViacomCBS (Paramount, Showtime) to launch a new SkyShowtime streaming service in 2022, pending regulatory approval. It is not clear if the 45-day plan extends to SkyShowtime.
