LG will launch five "QNED" LCD models in 2022, two with 8K resolution and three with 4K resolution. Four of them will utilise miniLED local dimming backlights.
LG high-end LCD in 2022
QNED, short for Quantum Nanocell miniLED (except in QNED81, apparently), is LG's answer to TCL and Samsung's "QLED" LCD TVs. The many fancy names for conventional LCD technology are attempts to offer alternatives to OLED, which LG is pioneering as the option for best picture quality.
- "Demonstrating its continuing leadership in the LCD TV space, LG is also unveiling an expanded QNED TV lineup for 2022. Boasting LG’s own Quantum Dot NanoCell technology, the fresh range offers stellar color reproduction with 100 percent color volume. Able to deliver rich, accurate colors in the brightest and darkest areas of a scene, LG QNED Mini LED TV is capable of amazing contrast thanks to LG’s Precision Dimming Technology," the company announced at CES 2022.

QNED99 will be LG's flagship 8K LCD TV for 2022 with up to approx. 2500 dimming zones in the largest 86-inch model. QNED95 (QNED96) is a more affordable 8K LCD model with a 50/60Hz panel and miniLED backlight.
QNED90 (QNED91) and QNED85 (QNED86) will be LG's top 4K LCD TVs for 2022 with miniLED local dimming. Sizes range from 55 to 86 inches. The number of zones will vary between the two, but was otherwise not specified. QNED80 (QNED81) is an edge-lit LCD TV without miniLED and without advanced local dimming.
LG touted an improved local dimming algorithm compared to last year's models that suffered from blooming and low contrast. The company now refers to its dimming as Precision Dimming, Pro, and Pro Plus. The TVs are powered either by the Alpha 9 Gen 5 or Alpha 7 Gen 5 processor.
LG's new LCD models will also come with webOS 22, HDMI 2.1 with 4K120 and VRR in some models, Filmmaker Mode auto-switching (only Amazon Prime Video at this time), the Game Dashboard/Optimizer menu, AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, Google Stadia, GeForce Now, and other new 2022 features detailed in our article about LG's 2022 OLED TVs. 'Always Ready' functionality will be available in QNED99, 95, and 90.
Matter support will be added in the second half of 2022 through a firmware update.
Pricing and availability details will be announced later.
