LG Display is evaluating two different OLED panel types for monitors, tablets and notebooks, according to a report by The Elec.
OLED diversification
LG Display is currently using WOLED, or WRGB OLED, for its OLED panels that go into TVs from LG Electronics, Sony, Panasonic, Philips and other brands. For monitor panels, the company is considering a different approach.
- "The South Korean display panel maker was reviewing both white-OLED (W-OLED) and red, green and blue-OLED (RGB-OLED) for OLED panels aimed at monitors in the 30-inch range, LG Display senior vice president Lee Hyun-hoo said during a conference at Busan hosted by analyst firm UBI Research," reported The Elec.
In addition, LG Display is looking into the possibility of manufacturing 10- to 20-inch OLED panels for tablets and notebooks. These would be produced on a 8.5 generation production line, which should reduce production costs as compared to current OLED monitor panels.
WOLED uses an extra white subpixel to boost brightness in addition to RGB color filters. RGB OLED uses red, green and blue emitting subpixels.

LG Display is currently using WOLED in all OLED TV panels
Samsung Display is producing RGB OLED displays for smartphones and tablets, but these panels use the controversial PenTile pixel structure. For monitors and TVs, Samsung Display has developed blue OLED with quantum dot color converters for red and green – so-called QD-OLED.
LG Electronics, the consumer brand, already offers high-end OLED monitors. These are equipped with RGB OLED panels from Japan OLED (JOLED).
LG Display's Lee Hyun-hoo noted that both RGB OLED and WOLED have advantages which is why the company is considering both approaches. However, it may still take some time for LG Display's OLED panels to show up in monitors.
- "The company will review pixels per inch for both W-OLED and RGB-OLED before it makes a final decision, the executive said. However, LG Display currently had no plans and is not developing the technology needed to manufacture OLED panels for monitors, he added."
LG Display did not discuss plans to use RGB OLED for TV panels.
