Matter, the upcoming royalty-free smart home connectivity standard, has a new member. Sonos is joining Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung and others, but it has yet to detail its plans.
Matter aims to achieve interoperability across ecosystems, products, and brands by running on Ethernet, WiFi, and Thread as well as Bluetooth for setup. It can work within existing smart home platforms such as Apple HomeKit and Google Home.
Sonos has quietly joined the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which is the coalition behind the Matter standard, reports The Verge.
- "Sonos has always been focused on giving customers choice. As an open platform with a wide range of partners, Sonos is committed to making sure our products integrate seamlessly with other smart home products," Sonos spokesperson Joani Brink told The Verge. "Our membership in the Connectivity Standards Alliance allows us to learn about emerging standards and also evaluate whether they provide for true interoperability at the platform or operating system level, which we consider vital to consumers and competition."

Sonos event later this month
Sonos has not commented on its plans for Matter integration but it has an event planned for May 25 where it could introduce a number of new products.
The company is reportedly working on a 'Home Theater OS' project and a new affordable and compact 'Fury' soundbar.
Matter will be released in fall 2022.
