Samsung reportedly abandons plans to launch cheaper WOLED TVs this year

25 May 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Don't expect Samsung to launch a line of cheaper OLED TVs in 2022. However, it could still happen in 2023, according to Korean newspaper The Elec.

In april 2021, multiple Korean news outlets reported that Samsung Electronics had approached LG Display to negotiate a supply contract for WOLED TV panels – a remarkable turn of events.

However, Samsung is unlikely to launch TVs based on LG Display's WOLED (or WRGB) even in 2022, reports The Elec.

- "Demand for TVs has dipped compared to the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic while liquid crystal display (LCD) panels [prices] that spiked before are dropping again, which means Samsung is in no hurry to launch W-OLED TVs as it did before, sources said."

Samsung had apparently asked LG Display to co-develop WOLED technologies going forward, a condition that LG Display was not receptive to.

It could still happen in 2023, according to the report.

Samsung Electronics recently launched its first QD-OLED TVs based on panels from Samsung Display.
