Soon you will be able to imitate Ambilight in some form by having Samsung TVs control Philips Hue lights to match the content on-screen, according to a report by SamMobile.
Update: False alarm. Samsung tells The Verge that Hue integration related to music, not TV.
The update will apparently be released in "the coming months", possibly in August, as part of a major update for the SmartThings app. SmartThings is Samsung's IoT platform.
- "Samsung is also adding support for Philips Hue Sync. This will enable users to sync their Hue smart lights so that they flash, dim and brighten with the content playing on the TV," the report from SamMobile said.
Samsung has previously confirmed that it will add support to Smart TVs for Matter, the new royalty-free smart home standard that aims to achieve interoperability across ecosystems, products, and brands. Matter is expected to launch in fall 2022, so it could be related.
Philips Hue syncronization with TVs currently requires a costly HDMI box
Philips is currently the only TV brand to offer mood lighting built directly into the TV.
It is also possible to syncronize the picture on TVs from other brands to Philips Hue smart lights, but it requires a rather costly HDMI box. Having everything integrated in a Smart TV would reduce the cost of entry.
