Western Digital launches first PlayStation 5 licensed SSDs (up to 2TB)

12 Jul 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Western Digital's 1TB and 2TB NVMe SSDs, starting at $170 dollars, let you expand storage for PS5 games on your PlayStation 5 console.

While some other M.2 SSDs from companies like Seagate should work fine with PS5, Western Digital's new SN850 SSDs are the first to be officially licensed – tested and certified – to be guaranteed to work with PlayStation 5, with up to 7000 MB/s read speeds.

Installing an NVMe M.2 SSD in PlayStation 5 lets you expand storage for PS5 games. An external USB hard drive will only allow you to store PS5 games, but not play them (only PS4 games).

The 2TB SSD provides additional space to store up to 50 games based on a 36GB average per game, said Western Digital. However, note that some big games such as Gran Turismo 7 can exceed 100GB. How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console

Before you begin, you’ll need:
  • A well-lit room with a table to work on.
  • A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
  • A small flashlight (optional). Before proceeding with the installing or removing process, touch a metal-grounded object to remove any static electricity from your body. Failure to do so may cause damage to your M.2 SSD or PS5 console.  Please note, don't power on or play on your console while the cover is off.
