You should not expect Samsung to launch cheaper OLED TVs equipped with LG Display's panels anytime soon as the latter has confirmed that negotiations have so far been unfruitful.
The confirmation came during LG Display's Q2 2022 earnings conference call on Wednesday this week, as reported by Korean media.
- "Our new client (Samsung Electronics) had sought to use our OLED panels," said Kim Sung-hyun, CFO at LG Display, according to Korea Bizwire. "While there had been some progress, the process has come to a halt at the moment."
Samsung's only OLED TV today is equipped with a QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display
Since at least april 2021, Samsung has reportedly negotiated with LG Display to buy WOLED TV panels for its consumer TV models. These TVs were expected to be positioned as more affordable OLED TVs below Samsung's current flagship QD-OLED TVs.
- "They couldn't reach an agreement over the price," an industry source told Korea Bizwire.
Industry sources claimed that there is still a possibility that the parties will restarts negotiations later.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display is ramping up production of QD-OLED panels and is expected to have the first 49-inch and 77-inch QD-OLED panels ready in 2023. In addition to Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display also supplies Sony Electronics with QD-OLED TV panels.
