Google wants Android TV partners to increase storage capacity

09 Aug 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Starting with Android 13, Google wants partners to ship Android TV and Google TV devices with increased storage capacity of 16GB or higher, according to a report by Protocol.

Devices such as Chromecast with Google TV and Nvidia Shield 2019 come with 8GB of internal storage while TV displays with Android TV or Google TV built in usually come with 16GB.

A portion of it is reserved for the system and insufficient storage capacity was on of our main concerns in our review of both Chromecast and Nvidia Shield 2019. 2-3 years later, we can't even install system updates without removing multiple apps first.

Google is now taking steps to fix the problem. - "The company is also strongly encouraging its hardware partners to ship smart TVs and streaming devices that run Android 13 with 16 GB of memory to have more storage space for apps and system updates," reports Protocol. In addition, Google is requiring Android TV and Google TV partners to support Bluetooth 5.0 on devices running Android 13 due to other new features planned for 2023-2024. - Source: Protocol
