New 'Simulated Reality' monitor displays 3D using light-field technology

18 Aug 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Dimenco's SR Pro Display is a new take on 3D technology – no glasses or headset required. They call it simulated reality as an alternative to augmented and virtual reality.

In 2008 and 2009, TV makers introduced 3D TVs that relied on active or passive 3D glasses. In 2016, Samsung declared the 3D TV dead and all other TV manufacturers followed suit soon after.

With origins in Royal Philips Electronics, Dutch company Dimenco is ready to revive 3D. This time without the need for glasses. Dimenco's technology uses a combination of "lenticular light-field computer vision, integrated sensors and image processing algorithms". In other words cameras that can detect your face and eyes and provide input to the screen for processing.

Their first product is the SR Pro Display, a 32-inch 8K monitor with 60Hz refresh rate that can display either 2D or 3D. It costs $11.690 dollars or 9.990 Euro and is meant for professionals initially. The company is also developing a solution that can be implemented in monitors, laptops, tablets and smartphones from consumer brands.

"Shot by camera, no special effects used", says Dimenco

Simulated Reality

SR is short for Simulated Reality and it is meant to sit between AR and VR. FlatpanelsHD hasn't had a chance to try the technology yet, but others have. - "After my time with it, I can only describe what I saw as jaw-dropping," PetaPixel's David Crewe wrote earlier this year. - "The proper sense of depth didn’t just help me race better, it made the driving experience look and feel much more real – in much the same way that VR’s immersion makes you believe you’ve been transported to another world," TechRadar's Hamish Hector wrote this month. "That said, the experience was still a bit behind the immersion the best VR headsets afford." That's high praise but we would still like to see the technology in person before we get excited. FlatpanelsHD has witnessed many previous attempts at glasses-free 3D and most of them have been wholly disappointing.
