'House of the Dragon' is HBO Max's first new series in 4K HDR & Dolby Atmos

The first episode of House of the Dragon is now available on HBO Max. With improved streaming quality, HBO is trying to avoid the quality issues that plagued GoT.

HBO's year long issues with poor streaming quality culminated in the 8th season of Game of Thrones when episode The Long Night sparked widespread complaints due to heavy compression artefacts.

The service has since been relaunched as HBO Max with improved streaming quality (4K HDR in HEVC compression) for movies. House of the Dragon is the first new series to debut on HBO Max in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. As a prelude, GoT was recently rereleased on HBO Max in 4K HDR, too.

In original 24fps, too

In addition, HBO Max in Europe has finally stopped converting its series from 24 to 25 frames per second with 4% speedup. Both GoT and House of the Dragon are now available on HBO Max in the original 24fps format in Europe. House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of GoT and tells the story of House Targaryen.
