The enhanced version of DTS Play-Fi supports up to 7.2.4 channel surround sound sent wirelessly from a TV to compatible speakers – no cables or dongles required.
About a year ago, Xperi – the company behind DTS and IMAX Enhanced – teased DTS Play-Fi Home Theater, which is an enhanced version of the original DTS Play-Fi wireless audio platform. It allows you to wirelessly connect compatible speakers and subwoofers to your TV for surround sound.
Supported in Philips 2022 TVs
The first compatible TV models are the Philips OLED937, OLED907, OLED807, OLED707, PML9507 and PUS8807 from the 2022 line-up.
Some of the first compatible speakers are Philips' Fidelio FB1 soundbar, FS1 speaker (can be used as rear speakers), and FW1 subwoofer. TVs with DTS Play-Fi Home Theater support are still compatible with the existing ecosystem of older Play-Fi speakers.

First wireless 7.2.4 solution
Apple, Bang & Olufsen (WiSA), Sonos, and Roku are also offering wireless audio technologies for TV stereo, surround sound or object-based sound, but Xperi claims that DTS Play-Fi Home Theater is the only one that offers support for 7.1.4 channels – even 7.2.4.
- "DTS Play-Fi will be the only whole home wireless solution to support 7.1.4 surround sound," said Xperi. "DTS Play-Fi Home Theater is the first technology to provide wireless surround sound using the TV’s built-in Wi-Fi. No dongles, cables, or wires are needed to create an immersive sound experience directly from the TV."
It is not clear from the published documentation if the system works with Dolby audio formats such as Dolby Atmos or only DTS audio formats.
The less expansive version of wireless DTS Play-Fi is also coming to select Vestel-produced TVs through a firmware update. Vestel has or is producing TVs under brands such as Finlux, Grundig, Hitachi, JVC, Strong, Toshiba and Thomson.
- "We are excited to be partnering with leaders such as Vestel and Philips to bring the extraordinary DTS Play-Fi sound experience to more homes around the world," said Dannie Lau, general manager, DTS Play-Fi.
To get started with wireless DTS Play-Fi on compatible TVs you can go to the new menu option on the TV or download the Play-Fi mobile app and go to DTS Play-Fi Home Theater -> Setup -> Connect Speakers.
DTS Play-Fi Home Theater – how it works
Consumers using a TV with DTS Play-Fi Home Theater can:
Use the TV’s built-in speakers as part of the surround system or upgrade them with a Play-Fi enabled soundbar or discrete Play-Fi enabled front speakers
Add Play-Fi enabled speakers as surround speakers
Add up to two Play-Fi enabled subwoofers
Utilize Play-Fi’s multi-room grouping of the TV with Play-Fi enabled speakers for music and TV audio, and app-based headphone listening
It is now also possible to:
Use a pair of speakers as Left and Right for the front channels, with or without a dedicated center channel, to create a wider front soundstage
Use the TV’s built-in speakers as a center channel for improved imaging and dialogue clarity
Use a stereo amplifier to drive rear surround speakers for additional flexibility including in-wall architectural installations |
