A new PlayStation 5 revision with an optional and detachable disc drive will reportedly arrive around September 2023.
The redesign, referred to as 'D chassis', will replace all current versions of PlayStation 5 (chassis A, B and C), according to Insider-Gaming's sources. It will be sold on its own and in a bundle. The optional disc drive can also be purchased separately.
- "The console, currently named the D chassis PlayStation 5, will have almost identical hardware to the existing consoles already on the market," reports Insider-Gaming. "The most surprising new feature of the new this new PS5 though, is that the console will have a detachable dis(c) drive. The detachable disc drive will be connected to the PlayStation 5 using an extra USB-C port on the back of the console."
It is not clear if this is a "slim" version of the PlayStation 5 console or simply a minor refresh designed to streamline production and bring down costs.
The report claims that the detachable disc drive is portable but that it will "not ruin the aesthetics of the console and will attach to it without looking external".
The new PlayStation 5 revision is expected to launch around September 2023.
