Xiaomi launches its first Google TVs

05 Oct 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Xiaomi has started the transition from Android TV to Google TV with the launch of its new Q2 range in Europe. The mid-range LCD TVs will be sold as "QLED".

Available in 50, 55 and 65 inches starting at 700 Euro (or 550 Euro as part of an introduction offer), Xiaomi's new TVs feature 4K resolution, 50/60Hz LCD panels, and three HDMI 2.0 ports. They are designed to compete with mid-range "QLED" models from TCL, Samsung and others.

The term "QLED", however, is largely meaningless as evidenced once again here. There is no advanced backlighting technology, the panel is 8-bit, and DCI-P3 coverage is just 92% making the TVs suboptimal for HDR viewing despite support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision IQ.

A better reason to buy Xiaomi's new screens is to get an affordable Google TV – the new user interface on top of Android TV. Google and partners are slowly transitioning from Android TV to Google TV and some new features such as user profiles are already reserved for the latter. Xiaomi did not specify the Android version under Google TV but said that Q2 uses a MediaTek MT9611 SoC with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. The TVs support WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, and HDMI eARC. They also support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Xiaomi Mi TV Q2 is available now from the regional section of the mi.com website and will be available from partners soon.
