Netflix with ads to launch on November 3 at $7 / £5 / €5-6 per month

14 Oct 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Netflix Basic with Ads will be available in 12 countries at launch in November and average 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour. Some movies and TV shows will not be available.

Netflix's new Basic with Ads plan will be an addition to Netflix's existing plans that will remain ad-free. The ad-supported plan will launch in November in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.

- "We’re excited to launch Basic with Ads — Netflix’s lower priced ad-supported plan — in November." said Greg Peters, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer, Netflix. "In short, Basic with Ads is everything people love about Netflix, at a lower price, with a few ads in-between."

At $6.99 per month, it will actually be the cheapest option for Netflix ever. When Netflix launched its streaming service in 2010 it charged $7.99 per month.

Around 5 to 10 percent of movies and TV shows will not be available on the ad-supported plan due to licensing restrictions, says Netflix, which suggests that it will related to licensed content – not originals.

Streaming quality will be 720p with 1 simultaneous stream. There is no download option but it may come later, hinted Netflix.

4–5 minutes of ads per hour

There will be an average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour and each ad will be 15 to 30 seconds in length. Ads will play before and during shows and movies, confirms Netflix who is partnering with Microsoft for the ad setup. - "We’re confident that with Netflix starting at $6.99 a month, we now have a price and plan for every fan. While it’s still very early days, we’re pleased with the interest from both consumers and the advertising community — and couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. As we learn from and improve the experience, we expect to launch in more countries over time," said Greg Peters.
