Netflix Basic with Ads is available starting today in the US, parts of Europe, Australia and a couple of other regions. It is cheaper but there are also a number of limitations.
Netflix's existing plans will remain ad-free but users now have the option to subscribe to a cheaper plan at $6.99/month that shows 4–5 minutes of ads per hour before and during movies and series with each ad lasting for 15–30 seconds. Netflix's games and kids shows remain ad-free (when watched on a Kids profile).
- "In short, Basic with Ads is everything people love about Netflix, at a lower price, with a few ads in-between," Greg Peters, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer at Netflix, said last month.
Well, not quite. Netflix's Basic with Ads plan is not supported on any version of Apple TV or older Chromecast dongles (it works on Chromecast with Google TV), as confirmed in a support document. It is not supported on PS3 and in the Netflix app for Windows either, and only on mobile devices running Android 7 or later or iOS 15 or later.
If you try to login on any of these devices with a Netflix Basic with Ads plan, the company will ask you to upgrade to a more expensive plan or use another devices.
- "To watch Netflix on your Apple TV, you'll need to upgrade your Netflix plan to the Basic, Standard, or Premium plan. Or, to watch Netflix and stay on your current plan, you'll need to use a different device."
In addition, subscribers cannot watch Netflix while traveling in regions where the ad plan is still not available.
Some movies and shows are not available at all. These titles will appear with a lock icon in Netflix's user interface.
