LG Display has today unveiled the world's first high-resolution display that is stretchable. It is based on microLED.
Not OLED but microLED with a pixel pitch of less than 40μm has made the display possible. LG Display says that the 12-inch display prototype has 20 percent stretchability, 100ppi resolution, and is full RGB color.

It can be stretched, folded and twisted without distortion or damage, and is described as "rubber band-like". The display uses a substrate made of special silicone from contact lenses.
- "Easily attachable to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles and aircraft, this unique innovation expands the potential of the display in various industries including fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming," said LG Display.
The company has not announced plans to commercialize the display.

National R&D project
The stretchable display is the result of a large-scale national R&D project the company was selected to lead by South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy back in 2020.
- "We will successfully complete this project to enhance the competitiveness of Korean display technology while continuing to lead the industry’s paradigm shift," said Soo-young Yoon, EVP and CTO at LG Display.
Samsung Display has previously showcased a slightly stretchable OLED display and more recently a slidable OLED display.
