Disney+ launches $8/mo ad-supported plan with 4K HDR but no Dolby Atmos

Shortly after Netflix's launch of its ad-supported plan in parts of the world, Disney+ Basic arrives in the US. It is a more complete offering than Netflix's but it still lacks certain things.

Unlike Netflix Basic which is limited to 720p and is missing 5-10% of the content library, Disney+ Basic includes the full content catalog as well as 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and IMAX Enhanced support. Users can create profiles and stream on up to four devices simultaneously.

However, there is no support for Dolby Atmos, downloads, GroupWatch and SharePlay, the company said. Disney+ Basic is not supported on Roku devices either.

- "Today’s launch marks a milestone moment for Disney+ and puts consumer choice at the forefront," said Michael Paull, president, Direct to Consumer. "With these new ad-supported offerings, we’re able to deliver greater flexibility for consumers to enjoy the full breadth and depth of incredible storytelling from The Walt Disney Company."

The company says that it has signed up more than 100 advertisers at launch. Initially, there will be four minutes of ads per hour.

Price increase

With the launch of Disney+ Basic, the company is increasing the subscription price for Disney+ Premium without ads from $8 to $10 per month or $110 per year. This makes Disney+ more expensive if you want the full experience without ads, but still significantly cheaper than Netflix's $20/month Premium plan which is required for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos. At launch, Disney+ Basic is available only in the US and the company has not announced price increases for other regions.
