New 27" & 45" OLED monitor panels also use MLA to boost brightness

10 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Not only select new OLED TV panels will use MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology to boost brightness and improve energy efficiency, but also LG Display's first 27 and 45-inch monitor panels.

- "Regarding your inquiries, both 45-inch Ultra-wide Curved OLED and 27-inch QHD OLED utilize META technology," LG Display wrote in a statement to FlatpanelsHD.

'Meta technology' is LG Display's term for the combination of a micro lens array (billions of tiny microlenses that help direct more light towards the viewer), or MLA in short, that maximizes light emission from the OLED panel and ‘META Booster’ which is a brightness-enhancing panel algorithm.

However, while the 55, 65 and 77-inch 4K OLED TV panels are specified to hit up to 2100 nits peak brightness, the 27 and 45-inch gaming monitor panels are specified to hit only up to 1000 nits peak brightness and 150 nits fullscreen. In addition, the 77 and 88-inch 8K OLED TV panels utilize MLA. Samsung Display has also introduced 240Hz OLED monitor panels in the form of QD-OLED. At CES 2023, LG Display confirmed that it has the "aim of extending it (MLA) to all lineups down the road".
