Netflix has updated its iOS app with a cool parallax effect, faster and smoother navigation, haptics, and other improvements. Meanwhile, Netflix's app for Apple TV remains conspicuously inferior.
Try to update the Netflix app on your iPhone to version 15.14.0. In each section it now has a 'billboard' with a parallax effect as you move the iPhone from side to side. The background color changes dynamically and titles are now 'cards' that you can open and close without delay. There is haptic feedback when changing between tabs.
Overall, navigation is smoother and faster, and Netflix has just set a new standard for smartphones that other streaming services are likely to find inspiration in over the coming years.
What about Apple TV?
Netflix's app for tvOS and Apple TV on the other hand remains stuck in the 10's – seemingly deliberately.
It lacks support for interactive content, top-10 lists, 'Play something', double thumbs up, the ad-supported plan, removable titles in the 'continue watching' row, integration with the Apple TV app, and other new features and interface elements that Netflix offers in its app on many other TV devices.
In a tweet, one of the iOS designers who announced the iOS redesign answered a question about the tvOS app saying that he has "been giving it some love", but no further details were provided. The tweet has since been deleted.
Take that as you will.
