Oft-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple is planning to launch its first foldable iPad in 2024, backing previous reports about the development of a foldable product.
- "There may be no new iPad releases in the next 9-12 months as the iPad mini refresh is more likely to begin mass production in 1Q24," wrote Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst at TF International Securities. "Nevertheless, I'm positive about the foldable iPad in 2024 and expect this new model will boost shipments and improve the product mix."
He added that it will feature a "carbon fiber kickstand" to make it light and durable.
It is not the first time that we hear about a foldable product from Apple, although Ming-Chi Kuo's timeline seems very optimistic. In August 2022, Korean newspaper The Elec reported that Apple has started a development project for a 20-inch foldable OLED product (10 inches when folded) targeted for launch in 2027. Ross Young, analyst at DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants), says that Apple is talking to its suppliers about a 20-inch foldable 4K display with a launch timeframe around 2026-2027.
Both The Elec and Ross Young cautioned at the time that Apple could abandon the plans.
Samsung already offers multiple foldable smartphones and is working on foldable tablets.
Apple is also rumored to switch from LCD to OLED in iPad and others products starting in 2024.
