Samsung's 2023 flagship 11.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar also controls the smart home

27 Feb 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung HW-Q990C succeeds last year's HW-Q990B. Still a 11.1.4ch system, it brings new software features and SmartThings compatibility to the table.

Like last year Q990B, Q990C (C for 2023) is a soundbar with up-firing and side-firing units that connects wireless to two rear speakers, also with up-firing and side-firing units, and a wireless subwoofer. It will be known as Q995C in some regions.

It supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, in addition to lower Dolby and DTS audio formats. It is once again the soundbar system with the highest number of channels for Dolby Atmos. For example, the Sonos Arc is a 5.0.2ch soundbar (but expandable) while LG's 2022 flagship S95QR will carry over into 2023 as a 9.1.5ch system. Sony offers the 7.1.2ch HT-A7000 (also expandable).

New software features, SmartThings

Samsung explained that an upgraded 'Q-Symphony' takes advantage of a compatible 2023 Samsung TV's processor to enhance speech or other parameters, and lets you use both TV speakers and soundbar at the same time. The subwoofer can now use the soundbar's microphones to analyze the room. 'Game Mode Pro 2.0' can automatically adapt sound to the game genre, but this is currently limited to games from Samsung's Gaming Hub, which is not available globally. For the first time, Samsung's SmartThings Hub is integrated meaning that the soundbar can become part of a smart hub built on Samsung's SmartThings platform and can control compatible home devices via Alexa voice commands to the built-in microphone. If you want Samsung with its questionable record in software to be in charge of your smart home is another matter, of course. It also features Apple AirPlay 2 for wireless music. Some existing Samsung soundbars will carry over into 2023 but the company will also launch other new models such as the HW-G60C that is designed as an all-in-one solution for gaming with Dolby Atmos support. It has four built-in microphones and LED lighting. Samsung's 2023 soundbars will be available starting next month. Prices were not revealed but expect Q990C to be pricey as the current model launched at $1900 and still costs $1500.
