Filmmaker Mode is currently limited to content in SDR and HDR10 but the UHD Alliance is working with TV makers to introduce Filmmaker Mode for Dolby Vision, too.
The news was shared by Michael Zink, President and Chairman of the UHD Alliance that has developed Filmmaker Mode in collaboration with Hollywood, at a briefing where LG unveiled its 2023 TV models, according to TechRadar.
To be clear, 2023 LG TVs will support Filmmaker Mode but it will still be limited to SDR and HDR10 content. The expansion of Filmmaker Mode to Dolby Vision content was approved in late 2022 and "is in the pipeline for TV manufacturers to implement" in the future – possibly in 2024 models.
Filmmaker Mode currently works with SDR and HDR10 only
Filmmaker Mode was introduced in 2019 as a way to preserve the intent of the filmmaker. When engaged on a TV, Filmmaker Mode disables motion smoothing and other picture enhancements, and adheres to the picture standards to ensure accurate colors and luminance.
No further details about Filmmaker Mode for Dolby Vision were provided but since the news was shared at an LG event we would hazard a guess that LG will be one of the first brands to support it in 2024 or whenever it arrives.
The UHD Alliance has also been working to make Filmmaker Mode auto-switch and to be more adaptable to the different ways and environments in which consumers watch movies on TVs in living rooms around the world, including bright rooms, by using a TV's built-in light sensor.
