More than 2 months after the VOD release and almost 6 months after the theatrical premiere, Avatar: The Way of Water is set to debut on Disney+ and Max on June 7.
Update: Both Avatar movies are now available to stream in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on Disney+. Avatar is the remastered 4K version that was released in theaters late last year.
The second Avatar movie is the third highest-grossing movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation) at $2.3 billion, behind only the original Avatar and Avengers: End Game.
With the release, Disney has shaken up its release strategy to make the movie available first on VOD as a separate purchase before making it available to streaming subscribers, as shown below. This appears to be the new norm for major releases as the latest Ant-Man also arrived on VOD before it was made available on Disney+.

On both Disney+ and Max
As part of a deal signed before Disney took over 20th Century Fox, Avatar: The Way of Water will also be available to stream on Max in the US – the new name for Discovery+ and HBO Max as of May 23 – alongside Disney+ globally on June 7.
It will be available to stream in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. There was no mention of an IMAX Enhanced version for Disney+.
There is currently no option to experience it in HFR (High Frame Rate) at home, and the Disney+ premiere does not appear to include an HFR version either.
There is still no news about a UHD Blu-ray release either.
Look out for Avatar: The Way of Water on Disney+ and Max on June 7.
