Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which will be released in theaters on July 12, marks the 500th theatrical film in both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
It is noteworthy milestone for Dolby, a company known primarily for its audio technology. The Dolby Vision video format builds on top of the base HDR10 format by adding dynamic metadata to better adapt the HDR picture to various display/projection technologies and products.

Dolby Cinema is EDR
To experience both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos in theaters you must visit a so-called Dolby Cinema, which is available only in some countries as a premium theater experience.
The first Dolby Cinema opened in 2014 and there are now over 290 locations spanning 14 countries, said Dolby.

The same movies typically get released later on home entertainment formats in Dolby Vision and Atmos, although there are differences between Dolby Vision in theaters and at home.
In theaters, Dolby uses projectors that are not capable of reproducing HDR images, which is why industry members typically refer to Dolby Cinema as EDR (Enhanced Dynamic Range) rather than HDR (High Dynamic Range), which can only be experienced at home on displays such as OLED TVs or in a few theaters equipped with direct-view microLED displays.
Dolby Vision at home
More than 1200 movies have been released in Dolby Vision on home entertainment formats, according to FlatpanelsHD's count, and more than 700 in Dolby Atmos.
Apple iTunes currently offers the largest selection of movies in HDR including the largest selection in Dolby Vision. You can find the full list here.
