The first generation Chromecast from 2013 will no longer receive support, including bug and security updates, and performance may start to degrade, says Google.
Google launched the first Chromecast in 2013 and it received the last update in November 2022. That is 9 years of support, which is not bad for an inexpensive $35 device.
The dongle worked just like newer Chromecasts with the option to push media content from a smartphone, tablet or PC wirelessly onto the TV screen. Google has later introduced the Chromecast with Google TV, which has a full user interface.
End-of-life
In mid-2019, Google said that it would no longer add any new features to the first-generation dongle but that it would continue to provide bug and security fixes.
Support for security and bug fixes has now also ended and Google says that users as a result may notice reduced performance.
- "Support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended, which means these devices no longer receive software or security updates, and Google does not provide technical support for them. Users may notice a degradation in performance," said Google.

Support for 2nd, 3rd Gen continues
Google is still providing updates, including new features, for the Chromecast 2nd Gen, Chromecast 3rd Gen and Chromecast Ultra.
