Like Xbox, Sony will soon let users stream PlayStation 5 games over the internet in addition to older PlayStation 4 and 3 games.
The company said that it has started testing the feature and that it is planning to later let users stream PS5 games that they own as well as PS5 games from PlayStation Plus (Premium), the company's game subscription service.
- "We’re currently testing cloud streaming for supported PS5 games – this includes PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as supported digital PS5 titles that players own. When this feature launches, cloud game streaming for supported PS5 titles will be available for use directly on your PS5 console. That means as a Premium member, it’ll be easier to jump into your favorite games without downloading them first onto your PS5 console. Our goal is to add this as an additional benefit to PlayStation Plus Premium as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the value of PlayStation Plus," announced Sony.
This is in addition to PS4 and PS3 games that are already available top stream for PS Plus subscribers.
Game console required?
At the moment, Sony's game streaming requires a PlayStation game console, which in some ways defeats the purpose. Sony previously supported cloud game streaming via apps on select Smart TVs, but the apps were later removed.
Sony has not detailed how users will be able to stream PS5 games. Further details will be announced closer to launch, it said.
- "We’re in the early stages right now, and we can’t wait to share more details when we’re ready, including a launch time frame. Stay tuned," said Sony.
Microsoft already offers game streaming from Xbox Game Pass on consoles and Samsung Smart TVs. The app will come later to additional Smart TV platforms. In addition, Microsoft is planning to later let users stream Xbox games.
