Samsung placed an order with LG Display for WOLED panels earlier this month that it will use to launch a large OLED TV later this year, according to Korean newspaper The Elec.
Earlier this month, Business Korea reported that Samsung is expected to unveil a 83-inch OLED TV with an LG Display WOLED panel as soon as September – maybe at IFA.
A new report from The Elec now claims that Samsung will take delivery of the first WOLED panels later this month for a TV that will be unveiled later in the year. It is a small order ahead of a more ambitious plan for 2024.
Custom WOLED panels
The report also claims that Samsung wants customized WOLED panels from LG Display that must be produced at LG's plant in Paju, South Korea – not Guangzhou, China.
- "Samsung has also requested that LG Display develop a W-OLED TV panel under the specification it wants," reported The Elec. "Sources said Samsung and LG Display are in near agreement that the panels will be 77-inch and 83-inch in size."
This is something that we have heard before. At that time, it was claimed that Samsung was seeking lower-specced panels for more affordable OLED TVs.
In addition to QD-OLED TVs
The TVs based on LG Display's WOLED panels will be in addition to TVs based on Samsung's in-house QD-OLED panels.
QD-OLED TV panels currently exists only in 55, 65 and 77 inches.
A reference to a 83-inch Samsung S90C has already appeared in South Korea's radio certification database.
