An updated Atari 2600+ with HDMI & cartridge support launches this fall

24 Aug 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

The Atari 2600+ is slightly smaller and now equipped with both HDMI and USB power but is otherwise very close to the original console. It supports both 2600 and 7800 original cartridges.

The retro gaming trend continues with Atari 2600+, a modern day recreation of the 4-switch console from 1980. It follows retro consoles such as PlayStation Classic, Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), Commodore 64, and Super NES Classic.

Atari 2600+ comes bundled with a replica of the original CX40+ joystick plus a 10-in-1 cartridge loaded with the following games: Adventure, Combat, Dodge 'Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, RealSports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball, Yars' Revenge.

More importantly, it is compatible with the original 2600 and 7800 game cartridges. A full list of compatible games can be found here. - "Preserving classic games is a priority for Atari, and the release of the Atari 2600+ will make the hundreds of Atari 2600 and 7800 games that have been released over the last 50 years universally accessible," said Atari Chairman and CEO, Wade Rosen. "Plaion’s approach to a quality recreation of iconic Atari hardware made them the perfect partner to bring the Atari 2600+ to market."

Connects via HDMI

It is still possible to connect the original Atari to a TV with an adapter but the new Atari 2600+ comes with an HDMI output that connects directly to basically any modern TV or monitor. It is powered via USB-C. The cabinet is 80% of the original size and the socket has been enlarged slightly to avoid cartridges getting stuck. It uses emulation software to run the games as it is based on a Rockchip 3128 system chip.
