Samsung is first to bring Bluetooth Auracast to TVs

30 Aug 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Bluetooth Auracast allows users to connect many compatible Bluetooth headsets to a TV at the same time. It will come for the first time to select Samsung TVs and earbuds.

As part of the Low Energy Audio extension to Bluetooth in 2022, Auracast was announced as a way to allow "an unlimited number of in-range Auracast receivers (to) be able to join an Auracast broadcast from a nearby Auracast transmitter".

For example a TV as the Auracast transmitter and headphones as receivers.

And that is exactly what Samsung will do with a software update next month to its Galaxy Buds2 Pro and select TVs; the 2023 'Neo QLED 8K' and 'Micro LED' models.

Maybe not unlimited, but a lot

While the Bluetooth organization says that an "unlimited" number of headsets can be connected through Auracast, Samsung is a little more cautious saying that it allows users "to connect multiple sets of Buds to a TV" – up from two today.

Samsung says that Auracast can even extend to "multi-language support without translation devices by sending different language interpretations via different channels", although this will not be supported in TVs initially. Auracast is also seen as a technology that can enable many other use cases beyond TVs such as audio broadcasting in theatres or assistive listening in various environments. - "As an innovator across a wide range of electronic devices — from smartphones to wearables, and from TVs to home appliances — we at Samsung are in a unique position to capitalize on delivering more seamless and extended experiences," said Junho Park, VP and Head of Galaxy Ecosystem Product Planning Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. At launch, Auracast will be limited to Samsung's most expensive and newest TV models, but we would be surprised to not see it extended to a wider range of models, starting with the 2024 line-ups.
