Amazon Prime Video starts streaming Thursday Night NFL games in HDR

12 Sep 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

With the start of the 2023-2024 NFL season this Thursday in the US, Amazon will start to produce and stream games in High Dynamic Range (HDR).

The news of HDR was announced by Amazon together with other new features such as rapid recaps and an X-Ray sports feature with player performance metrics, team info, and more.

- "Prime Video will produce and deliver TNF in native High Dynamic Range (HDR) for the first time, upgrading the viewing experience for fans with greater contrast between light and dark, and more vivid colors. Prime Video’s ability to capture and distribute native HDR pictures is made possible by its arsenal of next-generation production equipment, unparalleled livestreaming technology, and a direct-to-consumer delivery that is not constrained by legacy systems present in traditional broadcasting," announced Amazon.

HDR provides a wider dynamic range in luminance with more details as well as a larger color gamut including grass green.

The resolution is still 1080p HD.

Amazon did not say which HDR video format the games will be delivered in.

HDR adoption is still at an early stage in sports production and broadcasting but hopefully Amazon's launch can help speed up the transition in the industry.
