PlayStation 5 now supports Dolby Atmos for games & apps
Sony has today released a major system update for PlayStation 5 that adds new features such as Dolby Atmos for games and apps, 8TB SSD support, and DualSense accessibility. The new features, previously available for beta testers, are now available publicly for all PlayStation 5 consoles:
Dolby Atmos support
Dolby Atmos output during gaming is partly powered by Sony's Tempest 3D technology that packages the signal in Dolby Atmos, meaning that the game must support Tempest 3D audio. Alternatively, the game must be available with Dolby Atmos sound. The two-pronged approach is required with external devices such as soundbars and receivers as they do not have native support for Tempest 3D. Tempest 3D can be used directly in headphones where PS5 will not support Dolby Atmos. To enjoy Dolby Atmos the user must enable it under Settings -> Sound -> Audio Output -> Audio Format (Priority) after the update. The new Dolby Atmos option in the PS5 settings menu
Dolby Atmos will also work in media apps on PlayStation 5 but the apps must be supported by the provider first, for example Netflix.
