LG Electronics has been developing a next-generation NPU-based video, audio and data processor that is expected to debut as 'Alpha 10' in the 2024 LG OLED TVs.
In 2018, LG introduced its in-house Alpha 9 processor for OLED TVs, a first step towards more advanced picture enhancement algorithms developed with machine learning, or "AI".
Every year since, LG has introduced minor enhancements to the Alpha 9 processor, which has reached Alpha 9 Gen 6 in the 2023 LG OLED models (C3, G3, M3, Z3). The company's more affordable TV models feature the Alpha 7 or Alpha 5 processors

Meanwhile, LG Electronics' SIC Center (System Integrated Circuit) has been developing a second-generation chip with a powerful NPU (Neural Processing Unit), according to a report by Korean newspaper Etnews.
The new chip will reportedly be called 'Alpha 10' and debut in the 2024 LG OLED TVs.
- "The new NPU is said to significantly improve its 'on-device' performance compared to what has been applied to the previous AI chips. It means that it has advanced computing and reasoning capabilities in the end device stage such as smart TVs and home appliances without relying on high-performance computing (HPC) such as data centers. Also called 'edge AI', it can increase AI chip power efficiency and response speed, and increase security," reported Etnews. "The Alpha 10 is expected to be applied to the next model of LG Electronics' smart TV."
In other words, the chip can run more 'AI' models locally in hardware, much like what you increasingly see applied in new smartphones, such as the iPhone, rather than relying mainly on algorithms developed and defined in large data centers.

According to the report, Alpha 10 is expected to feature improved image analysis, noise reduction, object recognition, and AI-based audio enhancements.
In addition, Alpha 10 is expected to open the door to a new type of services using a camera with motion detection. The report did not provide examples but applications could include fitness tracking or motion-controlled games in the living room. LG will apparently make software tools available to app developers.
The new chip is intended for Smart TVs but the report notes that LG is also expected to apply it to other types of home appliances. This most likely ties into the company's plan to expand the webOS platform to other types of devices.
LG usually unveils its new TV line-up at CES in January.
