LG Display develops key OLED material, breaking Samsung's monopoly

11 Oct 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG Display has announced that after 10 years of research it has successfully co-developed its own p-Dopant OLED material, which is currently supplied exclusively by a Samsung-owned company.

P-Dopant is added in small quantities to the emissive layer to improve efficiency, brightness and lifespan of OLED displays. It is a key OLED material needed for mass-produced products.

The material is currently supplied exclusively by Germany-based Novaled, which is wholly owned by Samsung, so with the successful development of its own version LG Display can start to break Samsung's grip. LG Display said that it can now source 64% of OLED materials locally, up from 58% last year.

- "LG Display and LG Chem have been collaborating on research and development for approximately 10 years and have now finally developed their own p-Dopant that matches the efficiency and performance of its imported counterparts," announced LG Display.

Will be used in OLED TVs

LG Display confirmed that its new p-Dopant material will be used in WOLED panels. LG Display supplies WOLED panels to TV makers such as LG Electronics, Hisense, Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Vizio. It was not discussed if it will help bring down production costs of WOLED panels. - "Given the growing demand for Tandem OLEDs, a groundbreaking two-stack OLED technology, the need to secure materials is increasing as multi-layered OLEDs require a significant amount of p-Dopant," the company said. - "This self-developed p-Dopant will be integrated into LG Display’s large-sized and small- and mid-sized OLED panels, with a systematic expansion plan regarding its wider application."
