The next generation of Sharp's affordable LCD TVs for Europe will feature Google TV, 144Hz refresh rate, and HDMI 2.1 ports for use with the latest game consoles.
Advanced features that were reserved for high-end TV models a few years ago are now making their way into mid-range models, as evidenced by Sharp's new FQ8 and FQ5 – two variants of the same model.
Sharp TVs in Europe are typically more affordable than TV models from bigger brands, so it's worth keeping an eye out for these models next year if you are looking for an inexpensive TV.
HDMI 2.1, wireless surround
The TVs feature 4K resolution, up to a 144Hz refresh rate, HDMI 2.1 ports with support for HFR and VRR, an ambient light sensor for automatic picture adjustment to match your viewing surroundings, 2x15W built-in speakers, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding, and an aluminum frame.
There is even a built-in wireless surround sound platform, allowing you to connect compatible Sharp speakers and a subwoofer wirelessly to the TV.
HDR limitations
On the other hand there will be limitations in terms of HDR picture quality. The TVs do support HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision IQ, but the VA LCD panel with a Direct LED backlight lacks the zone-dimming required for HDR luminance control.
Peak brightness is 450 nits and DCI-P3 coverage 92%.
The Sharp Google TVs will coexist alongside the upcoming Sharp models with TiVo OS.
The Sharp FQ5 and FQ8 ranges will be available in Europe and select other markets. Availability and pricing details will be announced later.
