LG brings full-screen webOS to 2019 OLED and LCD TVs

06 Dec 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Full-screen webOS is rolling out to LG's 2019 TV models across the world through a firmware update. You can revert to the old interface if you do not like the new one.
Update: LG Korea confirms that the webOS update will also roll out soon to the C9 and E9 OLED models from 2019.
After bringing full-screen webOS to 2020 models in May, LG is extending the update to 2019 models, including the B9 OLED and UM/SM LCD ranges, with firmware version 05.40.09. The update has not yet reached high-end 2019 OLED models such as C9 and E9.

The redesigned webOS interface in full-screen, which is designed to look like webOS 6.0, replaces the familiar bottom bar menu that webOS was previously known for. - "To answer your question, LG has always strived to support our TVs long after the consumer has purchased it. The current updates that you are asking about to webOS 5.0 are meant to improve usability/navigation for those opting for the new version," David Seperson, Director HE Marketing and Communications at LG in Korea, told FlatpanelsHD in May 2023, referring to the update for 2020 models.

How to revert to the old webOS

LG's decision to update older generations of TVs with webOS aligns with the company's new strategy to evolve into a "smart life solution company", generating recurring revenue from ads and ad-supported services on active devices used in consumers' homes. If you are not a fan of full-screen webOS after installing firmware version 05.40.09, you can revert to the bottom bar menu by navigating to: Settings -> General -> Home settings -> Home screen style -> Basic LG has not disclosed plans to extend the webOS upgrade to other models or continue this practice in the future. webOS 23, featuring a more streamlined interface and new features, will remain exclusive to the 2023 models.
