Filmmaker Mode gains Dolby Vision & Apple TV+ auto-switching support

09 Jan 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

At CES 2024, the UHD Alliance has announced the two next steps for Filmmaker Mode; Dolby Vision support and auto-switching for Apple TV+ content.

First launched in 2019 with the backing of Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan, among others, the UHD Alliance's Filmmaker Mode is designed to present movies at home on your own TV the way they were created with accurate color, correct aspect ratio and frame rate, and without motion smoothing.

In 2021, Filmmaker Mode gained support for auto-switching to let metadata embedded in the streaming signal from Amazon Prime Video automatically engage the mode on compatible LG OLED and LCD TVs.

Dolby Vision and Apple TV+ support

Filmmaker Mode has since launch been confined to content in SDR and HDR10, but in 2024 it will for the first time also work together with Dolby Vision, meaning that you can activate Filmmaker Mode while playing Dolby Vision content. This announcement was made at CES 2024 by the UHD Alliance, as reported by MediaPlayNews from the press conference.

Filmmaker Mode is getting better in LG and Samsung TVs

At launch, Filmmaker Mode for Dolby Vision will work on LG's 2024 OLED and select LCD models. - "Filmmaker Mode has never been about one format or the other – it’s about every format out there, and it’s really a testament to wanting to make sure that consumers, once they see the brand, know they’re going to see the film the way it was intended to be seen, no matter what format it’s being played on," said Michael Zink, president and CEO of the UHD Alliance, according to MediaPlayNews. Additionally, Filmmaker Mode will gain support for auto-switching with Apple TV+ streaming, meaning that Apple TV+ movies will automatically activate the mode upon playback. Apple TV+ integration will be available on both LG and Samsung TVs. However, it remains unclear if it is exclusive to the 2024 models or if it will be a feature update to the Apple TV app. - Source: MediaPlayNews
