PS5 Pro rumored to be three times faster than PS5

19 Mar 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

PlayStation 5 Pro specifications have seemingly leaked. The new mid-gen console upgrade is said to deliver 33.5 teraflops of graphics performance, improved ray-tracing, and better upscaling.

The PlayStation 5 delivers 10.3 teraflops of graphical performance while Xbox Series X delivers 12 teraflops, so 33.5 teraflops would represent a significant jump.

There are of course many other factors to consider, and the leaked specifications, reportedly obtained from the PlayStation developer portal, also detail 2-4x faster ray-tracing, enabling more realistic lighting, shadow, and audio effects, and new Super Resolution upscaling. The CPU, however, will remain the same.

The leaked information comes from YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead, which has a spotty track record, and collaborated by Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, which has an excellent track record in regard to PlayStation leaks.

Support for 8K, again

In addition to improved 4K gaming at more consistent, higher frame rates up to 120fps, Insider Gaming is claiming that PS5 Pro (codenamed Trinity) will have an 8K 'performance mode'. As you may recall, the current PlayStation 5 was sold as 8K capable too – there is even an 8K logo printed on the box – but the firmware update to unlock 8K output over HDMI 2.1 is still missing, as reported previously by FlatpanelsHD. Microsoft is planning to launch a disc-less Xbox Series X in 2024 and a next-generation Xbox in 2028, according to a leaked internal roadmap, but there are no indications of a mid-generation console refresh to counter PS5 Pro. PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to launch this November in select markets.
