Disney CEO Bob Iger confirms that Disney+ will begin cracking down on password sharing in select countries in June and globally in September.
This timeline was communicated during an interview on CNBC.
The rules are already outlined in the Disney+ terms of service, and this year Disney will apparently begin actively enforcing them.
What to expect from Disney+
Earlier this year, Disney commented on its plan to combat password sharing, saying that subscribers suspected of sharing their account will initially receive a prompt to create their own account or add extra members for an "additional fee."
This approach mirrors Netflix's strategy where subscribers can add extra households to their subscription for $8 per month per household.
- "Paid sharing is an opportunity for us," Hugh Johnston, CFO at Disney, said earlier this year. "It’s one that our competitor is obviously taking advantage of, and one that sits in front of us ... We’ve got some very specific actions that we’re taking in the next couple of months."
It is part of the company's long-term plan to achieve profitability in streaming this year.
Disney+ will provide more details later.
