TCL unveils C855 miniLED LCD TVs with up to 2304 zones, 3500 nits

09 Apr 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

TCL has unveiled the miniLED LCD successor to last year's popular C845. The new C855 will be available in sizes ranging from 65 to 98 inches with up to 3500 nits peak brightness.

Chinese TV brands such as Hisense and TCL are making significant strides in the TV market, challenging the dominance of South Korean brands by offering similarly specced LCD TVs at notably lower prices.

Last year, FlatpanelsHD awarded TCL's C845 with our Highly Recommended award (review), as it offers nearly comparable performance to Samsung's top miniLED LCD models at a significantly lower price.

TCL has now announced the successor, C855, as part of the 2024 line-up for Europe and some other regions. TCL's North American lineup currently consists of several identical models, but they are marketed under different model names.

Many more zones, higher brightness

C855 still features a miniLED backlight, but TCL has significantly increased the number of dimming zones to 1344, 2160, 2304, and 2160 in the 65, 75, 85, and 98-inch models, respectively. For comparison, last year's C845 featured 480, 576, 720, and 896 zones in 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches, respectively. This is more than double the number of zones for each size class, although still fewer than TCL's flagship X955. Last year's C845 was advertised as capable of achieving 2000 nits while C855 can hit up to 3500 nits, according to TCL. We hope to examine this claim in a review soon.

C855 also features Google TV with built-in Chromecast, 4K resolution, two HDMI 2.1 ports, a VA LCD panel, 144Hz VRR and FreeSync support, a 2.2.2-channel Onkyo speaker system, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, Dolby Vision up to 120Hz, IMAX Enhanced certification, and a slimmer design. It is powered by the company's AiPQ Pro processor. In some European countries, C855 will also be known as the C89B and C859. The new TVs will launch soon in Europe, with prices starting at around 2000 Euros for the 65-inch version.
