Target says that it will be transitioning its assortment of DVDs and Blu-rays to its online store. It will continue to sell discs in-store only during key times of the year.
Target has commented on a a rumor that it will stop selling physical media in-store and online by 2025, providing the following clarification to IGN:
- "Based on our guests' shopping patterns and broader industry trends, we're transitioning the limited assortment of DVDs we carry in our stores to Target.com, where guests will continue to find thousands of titles," a Target spokesperson told IGN. "Moving forward, we'll offer select DVDs in stores when they are newly released or during key times throughout the year when they are more popular, like for gift giving during the holidays."
Target will continue to sell physical game discs in retail stores.
A trend
While Target is not completely abandoning DVD, Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray discs in stores just yet, it is a worrying trend for movie collectors.
Last year, it was reported that Best Buy is planning to exit the disc market in 2024, and it certainly seems to be happening, according to user reports.

This leaves Walmart as the only major retailer standing. However, many online retailers continue to sell physical media discs, including Amazon.
The disc market (DVD, Blu-ray, UHD Blu-ray) has been in decline for many years and still is, mainly due to the rise of streaming services. UHD Blu-ray is taking a growing share of the shrinking disc market.
