A sneak peek at the upcoming X (Twitter) app for Smart TVs

26 Apr 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

X, formerly known as Twitter, is preparing to launch a TV platform app to rival YouTube. Here is a sneak peek at the upcoming streaming service.

Xtube? No, it will apparently be called X TV.

After Elon Musk confirmed last summer that development was underway for a Smart TV app, X is now offering users a glimpse of what to expect:

Widescreen video

From the preview, it seems that X is emphasizing – or at least highlighting – long-form videos over short-form TikTok-style fast food for the human mind. It would also appear that X is prioritizing videos in widescreen format, which makes sense given that the app is intended for viewing on TV screens. However, you can never be sure. TikTok's app for Smart TVs, including Samsung's The Sero, focuses on vertical videos, but it does not appear to be very popular. YouTube remains the dominant social media service on TVs, while Facebook has abandoned its TV project. X has not yet disclosed specific details such as supported TV platforms or a launch timeframe.
