Walmart's new streaming dongle is the first to feature Google TV's 'Magic button'

Walmart's new Onn 4K Pro streaming dongle runs Google TV and doubles as a tiny speaker. it is also the first to feature the long-rumored 'Magic button' in Google TV.

The Onn 4K Pro has appeared in some Walmart stores in the US, as spotted by YouTuber Superdell TV, but it has yet to be made officially available online. It costs $50 and is a more premium alternative to Walmart's current Onn streaming dongles.

The Onn 4K Pro will compete with Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Google's 4K Chromecast with Google TV, but it doubles as a tiny Google Home speaker with built-in microphones for voice control. It features an Amlogic S905X4 SoC with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, WiFi 6, 100 Mbps Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, and USB 3.0. It supports 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos as well as AV1 video decoding.

First device with Magic button

As noted by AFTVNews, it is the first Google TV device to feature Google's so-called Magic button that was introduced as part of Android 14 for TV devices, although the Onn 4K Pro runs Android 12, so the framework appears to be backwards compatible. The Magic button has a star logo on it (top right on the remote) and can be configured to act as a shortcut button to your favorite streaming app. Alternatively, it can be configured to switch TV input. It appears to be a reaction to the many unwanted sponsored buttons, although Walmart's new device still has five sponsored buttons, as seen in the first photo. Most people had expected the Magic button to appear first on an upgraded 4K Chromecast with Google TV, which is overdue for a hardware upgrade. A new version has been rumored for some time and could be announced at Google I/O 2024 on May 14.
