Asus unveils first OLED monitor with a glossy panel

29 May 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

The new 27-inch XG27AQDMG is the first glossy OLED panel more akin to OLED TVs rather than the duller anti-reflective coatings of other OLED monitors.

The XG27AQDMG, which is the successor to Asus' "end game" PG27AQDM, was not part of the CES announcement but has appeared on the company's website, as spotted by TFTCentral.

It features a third-generation 27-inch WOLED panel from LG Display with 2560x1440 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, 0.03 ms response time, and HDR10 support for HDR gaming. It also includes ELMB (Extreme Low Motion Blur), which is a black frame insertion technology that runs at 120Hz (half the native refresh rate) to reduce motion blur, though it increases flicker. Asus says that it has an "ROG-exclusive OLED Anti-flicker technology helps reduce the flicker during refresh-rate fluctuations" (VRR) plus a custom heatsink to "reduce the risk of burn-in". The 3-year manufacturer warranty covers burn-in.

Glossy OLED panel

The standout feature, however, is the glossy OLED panel, which many buyers have been asking for. Other OLED monitors on the market today have a matte coating to help reduce reflections but this also negatively affects black levels, contrast and color. LG Display's WOLED monitor panels typically have an anti-glare coating, while Samsung Display's QD-OLED monitor panels are sometimes described as 'semi-glossy'. Here's an illustration made by Asus for its new XG27AQDMG:

More glossy OLED monitors to follow?

It is encouraging to see glossy OLED monitors emerge. It appears that the coating is part of the panel from LG Display, rather than something specifically applied by Asus. Therefore, we can expect to see this type of panel in OLED monitors from other brands in the near future. Dough (formerly Eve) previously announced a "glossy" OLED monitor, but it turned out to be the matte panel with a glass front mounted by Dough. The 27-inch Asus XG27AQDMG will be available soon for $749. Pricing for other regions has yet to be confirmed.
