Three and a half years after the launch of PlayStation 5, Sony has yet to issue the promised system update to enable 8K video output. It has now removed the 8K logo from the box.
As first highlighted by FlatpanelsHD in December 2022, Sony has advertised 8K support for PlayStation 5 since launch.
- "PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software," Sony writes in its official FAQ.
The console does support internal 8K rendering and The Touryst became the first game to render in 8K60. However, PS5 downscales to 4K60 for output over HDMI 2.1 and the console has yet to receive the promised system software update to enable 8K video output.
8K logo removed from box
Sony has now taken the step to remove the 8K logo from the box of the PlayStation 5, as highlighted on Reddit. The logo was still present when Sony recently launched the PlayStation 5 Slim.
It is unclear if Sony has completely abandoned plans to enable 8K on the PlayStation 5. At this time, no streaming services offer content in resolutions higher than 4K, but that could change in the future.

Scaled back 8K ambitions
What is clear, however, is that Sony has significantly scaled back its short-term ambitions for 8K TVs and 8K in general.
The company did not launch any new 8K TVs in 2023, and none have been announced for 2024 either. 2022's Z9K will remain available again this year.
Microsoft still advertises Xbox Series X as 8K capable.
