Samsung launches its first flat QD-OLED monitors

18 Jul 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung's 2024 QD-OLED monitors are still designed primarily for gaming, but two of them are no longer curved. The 27-inch G6 and 32-inch G8 are now available.

The monitors were unveiled earlier this year at CES. They all feature the third-generation QD-OLED panel with higher resolution and faster refresh rates.

Samsung's flat G6 (G60SD) and G8 (G80SD) are available now in North America and major European countries, but the new ultrawide – still curved – G9 (G90SD) will not arrive until later this year. The 'D' in the model name denotes the 2024 generation.

G6 is a 27-inch QD-OLED monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution and a 360Hz refresh rate. G8 is Samsung's first 32-inch QD-OLED with 4K resolution, featuring a 240Hz refresh rate. While 4K resolution on a flat 32-inch panel sounds like the ideal setup for both content consumption and graphics/video editing, it is worth noting that QD-OLED still has triangular-shaped pixels that can produce color fringing around text and objects. This effect has been further reduced in the third-generation panel but is still visible.

G6 and G8 are primarily designed for gaming, offering very fast response times, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, VRR support, and true HDR display capabilities, unlike Samsung's 'Odyssey Neo' LCD monitors. Additionally, G8 features Samsung's NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, known from the company's 8K flagship TV model. They also have anti-glare coatings. This year's new QD-OLED monitors will compete with the upgraded WOLED monitors from manufacturers such as LG, which is moving to 480Hz this year, with both 27 and 32-inch options. Samsung's monitors also come with the Tizen operating system built-in for access to streaming apps as well as Core Lighting+, akin to Ambilight.
