The elusive blue PHOLED, which could greatly improve OLED displays, is now within reach as LG Display has successfully developed its first "dream" OLED panel.
As reported in 2022, the next significant advancement for OLED technology, after QD-OLED and micro lenses (MLA), is the transition from fluorescent to phosphorescent (PHOLED) blue. This shift will increase internal luminous efficiency for blue from 25% to 100%, potentially reducing power consumption by up to 25% for the entire OLED display – or enable brighter screens.
The red and green OLEDs have already adopted PHOLED.
Earlier this month, there was disappointing news as the leading developer, Universal Display, delayed the launch of the blue PHOLED material from 2024 to 2025.
The good news
Here's the good news: It was confirmed today to Korean media that LG Display, the manufacturer of WOLED panels for TVs, monitors and other devices, has successfully developed a new OLED panel using the blue "dream OLED material" – also referred to as the "last puzzle of OLED".

The panel is reportedly a two-stack tandem OLED that uses a hybrid method of combining fluorescent and phosphorescent blue OLED to improve efficiency while ensuring a lifespan comparable to existing OLED panels. LG Display is using Universal Display’s blue PHOLED.
There is currently no information on the timeline for its launch or whether it will first be applied to TVs, monitors or mobile OLED panels.
