Three new Xbox consoles launched: Disc drive is no longer standard

15 Oct 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

The regular Xbox Series X no longer comes with a disc drive while Xbox Series S gets double the storage. The three new Xbox consoles are available starting today.

The three new Xbox consoles are:
  • Xbox Series S without a disc drive and 1TB storage for $350 / €350 / £300
  • Xbox Series X without a disc drive and 1TB storage for $450 / €500 / £430
  • Xbox Series X (Galaxy Limited Edition) with a disc drive and 2TB storage for $600

    Disc drive no longer standard

With the launch of the new Xbox consoles and PS5 Slim/Pro, the disc drive is no longer a standard feature in consoles. It marks a turning point for Microsoft and Sony, who have built their consoles around physical discs for generations. In this new reality, console games must be purchased from Sony and Microsoft’s online stores, reducing price competition, while movies must be streamed.

Sony sells a separate disc drive that can be retrofitted to both the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro. Xbox Series S is not available with a disc drive, while the Xbox Series X will soon only be available with a disc drive in the 'Galaxy Limited Edition' at a significantly higher price. The old Xbox Series X with a built-in disc drive will only be sold as long as supplies last, confirmed Microsoft.
