LG adds motion-enabled games to webOS Smart TVs

10 Dec 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG has announced that Cut the Rope and Thief Puzzle are the first motion-enabled games on webOS. They can be controlled with LG's motion remote.

Through a partnership with German HTML game studio Famobi, LG believes it has found a use for its motion-enabled Magic Remote.

- "As part of this collaboration, LG Smart TV users can now play Cut the Rope, a mind-bending puzzle game packed with fun, using their LG Magic Remote for effortless and precise moves without the need for extra gaming controllers. Additionally, LG has recently brought the popular mobile game Thief Puzzle to its smart TVs, enabling users to enjoy various puzzle jigsaw challenges customized for the LG Magic Remote," announced LG.

Works only on newer LG TVs

LG's decision not to upgrade webOS in older TVs once again results in frustrating limitations for owners. Cut the Rope works only on LG OLED and LCD models with webOS 22 or later, i.e. 2022 models and newer. Thief Puzzle works only on LG TVs with webOS 6.0 or later, i.e. 2021 models and newer. Games with ads

In 2023, LG announced a shift in its TV business, including webOS, to focus on revenue from ads and services. Users now see more ads in the interface, including screensaver ads on OLED and LCD models. The push into casual gaming also includes ads. - "LG has teamed up with Simulmedia, known for pioneering a digital approach to TV advertising, to introduce PlayerWON. This in-game advertising solution seamlessly integrates high-quality, non-intrusive ads into gameplay. LG aims to support its game partner companies in achieving sustainable growth through a vibrant and evolving game ecosystem, offering engaging and interactive solutions that add to the gaming experience," the company acknowledged.
