The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has added the DisplayHDR True Black 1000 tier for high-end OLED monitors as well as ClearMR 15000, 18000 and 21000.
Most of VESA's DisplayHDR certification tiers have little to do with actual HDR and are given out left and right to contrast-poor LCD monitors incapable of reproducing HDR pictures.
The DisplayHDR True Black tiers, however, are closer to the mark, and now there is a DisplayHDR True Black 1000 tier for monitor makers to pursue with OLED, QD-OLED and future self-emitting display technologies. It requires a monitor to deliver 1000 nits highlights and 500 nits full-screen brightness, all while maintaining a 0.0005 nits black level.
- "By adding a new 1000 performance tier to our DisplayHDR True Black standard, VESA provides consumers with the assurance that certified products have successfully passed a robust set of test criteria and represent a premium standard for OLED HDR displays," said Roland Wooster, chairman of VESA's task group for DisplayHDR True Black and ClearMR.
ClearMR 21000 certification
First introduced in 2022, VESA's ClearMR certification grades motion blur on monitors. The higher the number, the less motion blur the display has; the ratio of clear pixels to blurry pixels as a percentage.
The update to the ClearMR specification adds ClearMR 15000, 18000 and 21000 for the fastest monitors on the market, i.e. OLED monitors with 480Hz and beyond.
